How to download Adobe Acrobat Reader

Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader

Downloading and installing Acrobat Reader on your computer is a snap. But read these five simple steps first. (You may want to print this page out and follow along before you go to the Acrobat download page.)

  1. Select which version of Acrobat Reader you wish to download from the options available. Then, select your computer's operating system (Windows 95, Macintosh, etc.) and the language version of Acrobat Reader you want to install.

  2. Register with Adobe. Users will fill out a small form and provide your name, mailing address and e-mail address. Adobe does not sell this information to outside sources, and you have the option of entering as much or as little information as you want.

  3. Click the "Download" button at the bottom of the screen. This will send you to a download and installation page where you can choose from a number of locations that have the Acrobat Reader available.

  4. Click on one of the download sites, then select a folder to download the file to. The program is between four and five megabytes in size, based on which version of Acrobat Reader you've selected. Depending on your operating system and modem speed, it will take 20-30 minutes to download the file.

  5. After the program has been downloaded, close your web browser. If you don't, the Acrobat Reader won't install itself properly. Locate the folder you downloaded the file to, then open the folder and double-click on the file. This will start the Acrobat Reader setup process, which will guide you through the rest of the installation.

Additional Information

The Acrobat Reader should install itself as a plug-in program (if you're using Netscape Navigator) or an ActiveX control (if your web browser is Internet Explorer). The program will also install itself as a stand-alone application so that you can view PDF documents without having to open your web browser. Once you've installed Acrobat Reader on your system, the program will automatically start whenever you attempt to download a PDF file from a website. The program will also start up anytime you double-click on a PDF file that's located on your hard drive. Getting Help If you have any questions about installing or using Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can access a number of help files from Adobe's website at http://www.adobe.com. You can also conduct a search for help on the Internet using one of the various search engines available, such as Hotbot, Infoseek or Yahoo.
