Life Lays Off 49

Editorial Staff

The sports program has been cut, and off-campus properties are on the market. With already a reported $2 million loss in tuition from the summer session, and after years of inflated salaries for a few top administrators (Sid Williams $900,000; Nell Williams $500,000; D.D. Humber $625,870; Mildred Kimrough $323,000), Life University is now down to the really dirty decisions - layoffs. The school let go 49 employees on Aug. 28, which represents about 10 percent of the school's work force.

"Stop Insulting" Chiropractic

Derek Parra, the speed skating champion who won gold and silver medals at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, has asked Jim Rome in a letter to "stop insulting the chiropractic profession" on his sports radio program.

Derek, who is a chiropractic patient, was sponsored by the ACA and the ACAuxiliary throughout the year leading up to the Winter Olympic Games.

Mr. Rome hosts a nationally syndicated radio program that airs on approximately 130 stations throughout the U.S. and Canada. He also has a TV sports program, "The Last Word," which features interviews with sports figures. In August 2001, Rome made derogatory remarks about the chiropractic profession on his radio program; less than a year later, Rome read a letter from a medical student who referred to chiropractic colleges as "voodoo schools," and the chiropractic profession as the "chiro cult."

"Saying that chiropractors 'ruin spines for a living' and that they practice 'voodoo,' for example, is off base and extremely hurtful," Parra's letter stated. "Before making such derogatory comments in the future, you should investigate the stringent educational requirements necessary to become a doctor of chiropractic. I believe you will be interested to learn about the high standards members of this respected healing profession adhere to in all 50 states," he added.

A full copy of Parra's letter to Rome is at www.acatoday.com/hot_topics/082902.shtml. ACA is requesting that doctors of chiropractic nationwide who treat sports figures encourage them to send similar letters of protest to Jim Rome:

Life West's 6th Annual Backpack Drive

HAYWARD, CA - For the sixth year straight, the students, staff and faculty of Life Chiropractic College West have contributed to the school supply drive of the Family Emergency Shelter Coalition (FESCO). Life West was busy acquiring backpacks and contributing cash during August, while local organizations and businesses donated additional backpacks and school supplies.

"Thanks to Life West, we were able to meet our growing demand of backpacks this year," said FESCO Director Nubia Giles. "This year we had to meet the challenge of collecting school packs for 273 students, which this time included many mothers who were going back to college."

On August 24, Life West students were on hand to distribute and individually adjust each child's backpack.
