North Carolina DCs Collect for Florida Disaster Relief

Editorial Staff

The North Carolina Chiropractic Association (NCCA) has asked all members to use their offices as collection points for food, clothing, and monetary relief for the victims of Hurricane Andrew in South Florida and Louisiana. The program, "Operation Chiropractic Care," will collect funds and items to be distributed through the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, and the North Carolina Food Bank. Citizens who wish to contribute can identify participating chiropractic offices by the bright sign in the front window with the words "NCCA Disaster Relief Collection Center." Initiator of the program, Dr. Erin Kuczmarski, said, "It will require extensive help of all citizens to restore dignity and any sense of normal living to the many victims of this devastation."

Race Proceeds to Benefit Burn Camp for Children

The Connecticut Chiropractic Association was the title sponsor for this year's Fairfield, Connecticut half-marathon. The association donated the proceeds from the race to the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation, to provide a burn camp for the children. Over 1,850 half-marathoners participated in the event, which has been recognized by Runners World magazine as being one of the top 50 half-marathons in the country. The Connecticut Chiropractic Association was at the event to provide pre-race body fat analyses, spinal screenings, and overall health counseling to race participants, as well as families and friends of race participants. The race featured a very competitive field which included U.S. Olympic marathon team members Steve Spence and Bob Kempainen, as well as Olympians from Ireland and Poland.

Steve Spence was the winner in the men's category, his final race before heading to the Barcelona Olympics. Lisa Brady, the winner in the women's category, announced at the awards ceremony that had it not been for her chiropractor returning her to proper racing form, she would not have been able to participate in the race.

The half-marathon received extensive media coverage, with stories appearing in Connecticut newspapers, USA Today, and the television and radio news.

Life and Bishop State Community College Develop Joint Program

Life College of Chiropractic and Bishop State Community College (BSCC) of Mobile, Alabama have recently finalized a joint educational program. Through this program, BSCC students who complete the associate degree in pre-medicine studies or its equivalent, and then meet the minimum requirements of admission to Life, are ensured acceptance into the School of Chiropractic and/or the School of Undergraduate Studies. Both Life and BSCC have worked to introduce minority students and students with disadvantaged backgrounds to health care careers. Life signed a similar agreement with Morris Brown University in 1991, as did BSCC with Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in January of this year.
