Palmer (Davenport), Logan, and Northwestern colleges of chiropractic each sent representatives to the National Association of Medical Minority Educators (NAMME) conference in St. Louis, Missouri. Discussions focused on increasing the awareness and visibility of the chiropractic profession in minority communities.
Major goals of the NAMME organization include supporting and promoting all areas of education in the health professions, particularly those which involve the recruitment, admission, and retention of minority students, faculty and administrators.
ACA Staff Transitions -- Dr. Jerome McAndrews and Dr. Howard Balduc
The American Chiropractic Association (ACA)'s Board of Governors recently approved the hiring of Dr. Jerome McAndrews, director of the National Chiropractic Mutual Insurance Company (NCMIC) as vice president/professional affairs. Dr. McAndrews is currently the chairman of the ACA's Task Force on Managed Care.
In addition, Dr. Howard Balduc will fill the new position of vice president/professional information development. Dr. Balduc has served as the ACA's vice president of Academic Affairs since July of 1990. Prior to his work with the ACA, he was a professor at Northwestern College of Chiropractic (NWCC).
AACC Preventive Medicine Conference to Be Held
The American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC)'s 15th Annual Arnold O. Beckman Conference will address the ever-increasing need for the health care professions to focus on preventive medicine. The conference's title is "Preventive Medicine, Challenges and Opportunities for Clinical Laboratories" and will be held January 19-21, 1992 at the Newport Beach Marriot in Newport Beach, California. Topics include: health screening procedures, solutions to prevent chemical dependency, fraudulent health schemes, and the laboratory's role in preventing disease. Pennsylvania Society Elects New President
The Pennsylvania Chiropractic Society recently elected Dr. Carl M. Phillips to the position of president. He formally served as state secretary, district director, and public relations chairman.
Dr. Phillips completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Scranton and graduated as a doctor of chiropractic from the New York College of Chiropractic (NYCC) in 1980. He is a diplomate of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, a Fellow of the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists, and is certified by the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists. Dr. Phillips is also an examiner for the Pennsylvania State Board of Chiropractic, and is licensed to practice both in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Dr. Phillips is a member of the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER), the International Academy of Chiropractic Industrial Consultants, and the John Heinz Institute for Occupational Health Management Systems. He received the Society's Award of Merit in 1988 and received its Distinguished Service Award in 1989, 1990 and 1991.
Palmer College Names Academic Affairs Assistant
Mr. Randy Richards has been appointed assistant to the vice president for Academic Affairs at Palmer College. His duties will include analyzing institutional data, assisting in budget preparation, and conducting institutional research. Since 1974, Mr. Richards has been adjunct assistant professor of philosophy, teaching classes in ethics, and social and political philosophy. He received a B.A. in philosophy from St. Ambrose University, and a masters in philosophy from Georgetown University. Currently he is enrolled in the doctoral program at the University of Iowa, department of philosophy.
Life West Schedules "Sleigh Bells Dash"
Life Chiropractic College West will hold its fifth annual "Sleigh Bells Dash" run on December 8th. The co-sponsor for this year's run will be the Endangered Species Education Trust. All runners and walkers in the five-kilometer event will receive sleigh bells to wear on their shoes during the race, as well as "holiday colored" long-sleeved commemorative shirts at the finish.
Continuing the annual tradition, participants are encouraged to bring unwrapped toys for the Toys for Tots drive which benefits needy children in the Bay Area.
Parker's Delta Sigma Chi Creates "Philosophy Access Centers"
At Parker College of Chiropractic, the Mu Chapter of the professional chiropractic fraternity Delta Sigma Chi has announced the creation of "Philosophy Access Centers" or "PACs." These PACs will provide those interested in the science, art and philosophy of chiropractic with both historical and current materials such as BJ's Green Books as well as posters, calendars and other items of interest to the DC, chiropractic staff and patients.
Many relevant diagnostic signs are not performed deliberately by the examiner or by the patient at the examiner’s direction. They are observed as the patient reacts to their condition. Fortin’s finger sign, Minor’s sign, and Vanzetti’s sign are three examples of this principle.
On Feb. 1, 2024, two more legislators – John R. Carter (R-Texas) and Robert “Bob” Good (R-Va.) – co-sponsored the Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act of 2023, bringing the co-sponsor total to 155, two more than the total achieved over the entire two-year congressional cycle in which identical legislation last appeared (2021-22).
While working at the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M., one of the primary care physicians stated that imaging every patient prior to receiving chiropractic was not medically necessary. It was at that point I reconsidered the need for the imaging of every patient to avoid malpractice.
