Sherman College Reaches Out to Katrina Victims

At Sherman College, we are all profoundly saddened by the devastation Hurricane Katrina has caused. To assist those affected, including our own alumni and student families, the college has several programs in place.

For Sherman Alumni
We ask that Sherman College alumni affected by Hurricane Katrina check in with the Alumni Office so we may verify your safety and make you aware of assistance available to you. Please contact us at 1-800-849-8771, ext. 277, or email the Alumni Office at mroldan@sherman.edu. We have established the Sherman College Hurricane Relief Fund to make it possible for Sherman College employees to assist alumni affected by this disaster. We are accepting donations from employees and will distribute those donations directly to alumni who have incurred major hardships.

For General Relief Efforts
To help with general relief efforts for the Gulf Coast Region, the Sherman College Student Affairs Office has collected water, clothing and non-perishable foods to send to Hurricane Katrina survivors. We have also provided relief efforts and activity information to the college community and encouraged donations to the American Red Cross.

For Affected Chiropractors
Some chiropractors in ravaged areas have found that there is no longer a practice to go back to and as a result have had to look into practicing in other regions of the country. Unfortunately in professional practice it is not always a simple matter to relocate. Licensure laws differ in the various states, and practitioners may find that they have to retake state and national boards and sit for additional licensure exams. For a doctor who has been practicing and out of college for a number of years, the challenges of sitting for a licensure exam can be daunting.

In order to aid doctors in this position, Sherman College has had a long-standing policy of offering its alumni the opportunity to audit classes free of tuition. Now the college is extending this benefit to any chiropractors affected by Hurricane Katrina who may be considering practicing in new areas and therefore need to sit for additional parts of the National Boards and/or new state licensure exams.

Individuals wishing to take advantage of this college policy must have a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Alumni of other institutions, or Sherman alumni with alternative situations are generally charged 50 percent of the current tuition rate, but the college is waiving this fee for those chiropractors in areas affected by the recent hurricane.

Once the desired or necessary courses are completed, Sherman will provide the individual(s) with a letter certifying completion of a specific number of in class hours.
