LACC Participates in Consensus Conference

Dr. Reed B. Phillips, president of Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC)'s and Dr. Alan Adams, vice president for chiropractic education, served as moderators for the sixth Annual Conference on Research & Education in Monterey, California, June 21-23.

The conference was sponsored by the Consortium for Chiropractic Research (CCR), the California Chiropractic Association (CCA), and the American Chiropractic Association (ACA)'s Council on Technique.

This was the second such meeting held for the purpose of establishing a consensus among chiropractic doctors on practice guidelines and standards of care. This meeting focused on core concepts in chiropractic procedures. JMPT will publish a review of the papers submitted to the conference and Chiropractic Techniques Journal will publish summaries of the panel presentations.

LACC Representatives Attend Harvard Workshop

Dr. Gary Miller, LACC's dean of academic affairs, and Dr. Alan Adams, vice president of chiropractic education, joined nearly 170 participants representing more than 60 schools at an intensive week-long workshop at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, June 24-29. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss "problem-based curricula" such as Harvard's New Pathway Curriculum, which is similar in theory and practice to LACC's "Advantage" program.

In a "problem-based curricula", students study basic information, and then are given hypothetical cases or problems to solve using this information. They work in discussion and study groups, getting vital experience that they will use later when dealing with "real" patients.

The Harvard conference attracted educators and administrators from across the U.S. and around the world, including representatives from Brazil, Canada, China, and Thailand.

LACC Student Wins CCA Scholarship

Anthony Valencia, a ninth term student at LACC, recently won a $1000 scholarship from the California Chiropractic Association/California Chiropractic Foundation (CCA/CCF). Anthony received the award at the 1991 Annual CCA Convention in Monterey on June 22.

LACC Student Tours with Professional Volleyball Team

Gary Sato, an eighth term LACC student, toured the country this summer, captaining a professional volleyball team competing in the 1991 American Beach Volleyball League's 4-Man Beach Volleyball Tournament. Gary's team, "I dig," was one of five teams competing for a total of over $200,000 in prize money. The final match of the tournament aired on ESPN last month.

This summer's seven-city tour featured many of the world's premier volleyball players, including eight Olympic gold medalists. The host cities were: San Diego, California; Phoenix, Arizona; Cleveland, Ohio; Boston, Massachusetts; and Ft. Myers, Clearwater, and Myrtle Beach, Florida.

DCs were available at each game to treat the athletes.
