Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College and York University Seek Affiliation

Chiropractic Research Clinic Planned at University of Waterloo

The Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) and York University, after several months of discussions, have announced they are entering into negotiations to begin an affiliation. CMCC and York have signed a letter of intent to that effect.

The affiliation is motivated by a mutual interest in advancing health care education by including chiropractic in the multidisciplinary environment of a university. The Ontario government reinforced this interest through the recommendations of its Chiropractic Services Review Committee.

"This is a significant step for health care education," said Jean Moss, DC, president of CMCC. "Affiliation will open the way for substantial interaction between the students and faculty of our two institutions. We are thrilled by the opportunity for research advancement and the potential for academic collaboration that affiliation with York University will make possible."

York University President Susan Mann was equally enthused: "This is an exciting venture that will enable us to continue to build upon our strengths in the pure and applied sciences, in physical education, and in the emerging disciplines around wellness and multidisciplinary health care strategies. With CMCC located at York, we will be able to work together for the benefit of students from both institutions."

York University, founded in 1959, is Canada's third largest university with a matriculation of more than 44,000 full and part-time students. The university is well-known for its excellence in teaching and scholarship, close student/faculty relationships, innovative teaching methods, and a strong dedication to research.

The Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College is one of two chiropractic educational institutions in Canada, the other being the Universite du Quebec a Trois-Rivieres. CMCC is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. It has a student population of 600, and offers a four-year doctor of chiropractic program, an extensive postgraduate and continuing education program, and is recognized as a leader in chiropractic research.

University of Waterloo to Open Chiropractic Research Clinic

Chiropractic is making headway into Canadian academia in another area. A chiropractic research clinic is being planned for the University of Waterloo as a part of the faculty of applied health sciences community outreach and service programs. The clinic is now under construction at B.C. Matthews Hall.

The new clinic will be staffed by residents and faculty from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. College personnel, faculty, and graduate students from the University of Waterloo will be part of the clinic's multidisciplinary team.
