Musculoskeletal Hospital Admissions

Of the top five diagnostic codes requiring hospital admission, musculoskeletal disorders place fourth. This fact should encourage a chiropractic department in every hospital. While the admission figures below are only for Metropolitan Life in 1993, they underscore the need for chiropractic care in the hospital setting.

Major Diagnostic Category Number of Hospital Admissions

Pregnancy, Childbirth and Puerperium 59,419

Diseases and Disorders of the Circulatory System 34,479

Diseases and Disorders of the Digestive System 25,854

Diseases and Disorders of the Musculoskeletal 23,290
System and Connective Tissue

Diseases and Disorders of the Respiratory System 20,741
(vertical graph using file folders)

It should be noted that the average cost of hospital care for musculoskeletal problems was second among the group at $13,800. What impact could chiropractic care have on this figure?
