On Sept. 18, 2004, Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) will celebrate the beginning of "an exciting new era" with the official opening of its new, state-of-the-art campus at 6100 Leslie Street in Toronto. According to CMCC President Dr. Jean Moss, the new campus will provide students, staff and faculty with the modern facilities necessary to facilitate the best in chiropractic education and research.
The Sept. 18 Grand Opening Celebration is a historically significant anniversary for chiropractic -the date of the first adjustment in 1895 - but it is also significant for CMCC. On Sept. 18, 1945, the college first opened its doors at 252 Bloor Street West in Toronto.
"It will be a little bittersweet," admitted Dr. Moss. "[But] as we say good-bye to the fond memories, moments and milestones we've enjoyed ... we are all eager to begin the next school year at our new home."
The lecture halls of the new campus will feature the latest in audiovisual technology. The library, like other great universities, colleges and institutions, will serve as a center of campus life and activity. The teaching clinic and bookstore will invite clients and patients who have come to rely on CMCC for their health care needs.
Last year, we reported that CMCC had sold its property on Bayview Avenue in Toronto and had purchased a new campus property at 6100 Leslie Street. At that time, Dr. Moss noted that size was the deciding factor dictating the move: "For many years, CMCC has struggled with a campus that is too small. It has been hindered by insufficient facilities for the growing demands of our student body, faculty and staff. Put simply: We outgrew the campus, both in capacity and the amenities it housed."
To raise the estimated $30 million necessary to build the new campus, CMCC initiated its "Hands on the Future" campaign. According to Dr. Vince Sinclair, campaign co-chair, CMCC is approaching the halfway mark in terms of funds raised.
"Ambition doesn't come into fruition without broad-based commitment. We must have the support of every chiropractor in Canada and from CMCC alumni and friends around the world," urged Dr. Sinclair. "CMCC is Canada's national college; it must remain strong and the cornerstone of chiropractic for years to come. This is an historic opportunity to show our profession's solidarity by supporting this campaign."
With the campaign still in full swing, Dr. Moss expressed confidence that the campus will be completed on time. "Construction is progressing on schedule for students to begin classes in the fall at the new facility," she said.
