PORTLAND, Oregon - William Dallas,DC, president of Western States Chiropractic College (WSCC) since 1986, has informed the school's board of trustees that he will not renew his contract at the end of the college's fiscal year, June 30, 2003.
During his tenure, Dr. Dallas has been committed to improving the college's research department. Late in 1994, Western States became the first chiropractic college to receive a federally funded research grant through the Health Resources & Services Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. The grant was for more than $80,000 for a three-year prospective study to compare outcomes between allopathic and chiropractic treatment of low back pain patients.
In the August 11, 1997 issue of DC, Dr. Dallas wrote an article in our Presidents' Forum - "The Importance of Chiropractic Research" (www.chiroweb.com/archives/15/17/26.html). He explained his commitment to research: "Some in chiropractic claim that 'it works,' and that's all there is to it. Research is more than merely an academic exercise. It is the key ingredient in establishing chiropractic's role in an evolving health care system - and chiropractic research is carried on primarily at the colleges."
His emphasis on research has extended to making the chiropractic curriculum more evidence-based.
The integration of health care "for the good of the patient" - Dr. Dallas' own professional philosophy - has become the college's theme.
Dr. Dallas spearheaded the establishment and publication of Conservative Care Pathways and Protocols by the college for chiropractic procedures, and the construction of Hampton Hall, a state-of-the-art lecture hall.
While president of WSCC, Dr. Dallas also served as president (2001-2003) and secretary-treasurer (1999-2001) of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC); as president (1996-1998), vice president (1994-1995) and secretary-treasurer (1992- 1993) of the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE); and has held numerous offices within the American Chiropractic Association.
The WSCC Board of Trustees will begin a search for his replacement in the near future.
