New Jersey Hospital Opens Chiropractic Department

Editorial Staff

In October, New Jersey's Montclair Community Hospital announced the opening of a new department of chiropractic medicine, becoming the first hospital in the state to perform manipulation under anesthesia (MUA).

Anthony Oropello, MD, president of the hospital's board of trustees, appointed Albert Cattafi, DC, DSSP, as director of the new department. "We're pleased to join the expanding number of doctors and chiropractors across the nation who work jointly to maximize the quality of health for their patients," said Dr. Oropello.

In addition to his new duties at Montclair, Dr. Cattafi is also chief of chiropractic medicine at the Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center and past president of the New Jersey Chiropractic Society. Two other chiropractors from the surrounding area, Dr. Alfred Davis of Montclair, and Dr. Joseph Salamone of Fairfield, will assist in establishing the department. For more information, contact the hospital's Outreach Center at (201) 509-6225.

NWCC Asks the Students

The '60s was a time when students aggressively sought a greater say in their education, often resulting in physical confrontations with campus authorities and local law enforcement. The students of the '90s are considerably more mellow, but they still want to have their say.

To get the student perspective, Northwestern College of Chiropractic has come up with an annual student satisfaction survey. "We want to know what the students are thinking," said Larry Kuusisto, DC, dean of student affairs at NWCC.

More than 430 students responded to this year's survey.

Do such surveys get results? In the 1996 survey, NWCC students said they needed more resources in professional preparation. Within a year, the Career Services Center was opened at NWCC, designed to provide students with the kind of knowledge necessary to establish and manage a successful, ethical practice.
