CCF Invites Proposals for Research Awards
The Chiropractic Centennial Foundation (CCF) Board of Trustees invites proposals for the following research awards totalling $50,000. These are to promote and assist original research to be presented as part of the CCF's continuing education and scientific programs in Washington, D.C., July 6-8, 1995 and Davenport, Iowa, September 14-16, 1995.
1. Open Basic Science Award -- 1 of $10,000
For research in any area of the basic sciences including, for example, animal studies, neurophysiology, pain mechanisms, and subluxation.
2. Clinical Science Awards -- 2 of $10,000 each
For clinical science research -- one award for research relating to diagnosis and/or treatment of the cervical spine, the second award for research relating to a somatovisceral condition or effect.
3. Private Practice Clinical Sciences Award -- 2 of $5,000 each
To encourage research by private practitioners these awards are for proposals from chiropractors in practice. Any clinical research is eligible. This may include diagnostic studies, treatment studies, use of documentation in practice, outcome measures, and epidemiological studies.
4. History Awards -- 4 of $2,500 each
The focus of the continuing education and research program in Davenport will be chiropractic history. These awards are for research into the history of chiropractic. At least two awards will be for history projects that focus on or include chiropractic history prior to 1945.
The deadline for proposals in the award categories 1, 2, and 3 is September 1, 1993. Awards will be made and recipients notified by November 15, 1993. The deadline for award category 4 is January 1, 1994. Awards will be made and recipients notified by February 15, 1994.
"We want to be pro-actively encouraging research," said Dr. Carl Cleveland III, chair of the CCF Education committee. "It's important for the profession to see that the CCF is working to help the profession grow in the area of chiropractic research."

The Illinois Chiropractic Society and the Pennsylvania Chiropractic Society are the most recent state associations joining CCF.
The entrance of Illinois and Pennsylvania brings the total number of state associations belonging to the CCF to 36. Five foreign chiropractic associations are members of the CCF as well. They are: the Asociacion Espanola de Quiropractica of Spain, the British Chiropractic Association, the Chiropractic Council of Japan, the Norwegian Chirorpractors' Association, and the Association of Swiss Chiropractors.
"We're striving to get every state, country, and provincial association to join," said Dr. William F. Holmberg, CCF president. "State association dues are only $1,250 which can be paid in increments until 1995. We encourage all state associations to commit to the CCF as grassroots representatives of the Chiropractic Centennial."
Mr. Steve Eckstone, dean of Institutional Advancement at Palmer College of Chiropractic West (PCCW), has been named to the Advisory Committee of the CCF.
Mr. Eckstone is currently a member of the Foundation's Special Project subcommittee chaired by Michael Schroeder.
Many relevant diagnostic signs are not performed deliberately by the examiner or by the patient at the examiner’s direction. They are observed as the patient reacts to their condition. Fortin’s finger sign, Minor’s sign, and Vanzetti’s sign are three examples of this principle.
Spearheaded by burgeoning scientific and clinical research literature, psychedelics have reached a level of media coverage and popular interest that has not been seen for over half a century. By “psychedelics,” we are referring to the unique class of substances that includes psilocybin (the active compound found in so-called “magic mushrooms”), LSD, dimethyltryptamine (DMT), ayahuasca, 5-MeO-DMT, and mescaline – each of which occurs in the natural world (except for LSD, which is a semi-synthetic compound).
While working at the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M., one of the primary care physicians stated that imaging every patient prior to receiving chiropractic was not medically necessary. It was at that point I reconsidered the need for the imaging of every patient to avoid malpractice.
