The American Black Chiropractic Association (ABCA) will hold its 11th annual conference in Atlanta, Georgia on August 19-23. The conference's theme is "Renewing the Chiropractic Mind." During the convention the ABCA will also hold the Annual Black Tie Scholarship Awards Banquet, during which 10 black chiropractic college students will receive financial scholarships. The Eastman Kodak Company has donated $6,000 to the Palmer College of Chiropractic (PCC) radiology department for the purchase of educational materials. These materials include the American College of Radiology Learning File on video disk, which has an extensive collection of case studies dealing with the skeletal and gastrointestinal systems, as well as the chest. It also includes films on neuroradiology and MRI.
A successful inaugural seminar in Foot Leveler's year-long, nationwide 40th anniversary celebration took place in Los Angeles June 13-14. Half of all registration fees collected at each of the anniversary seminars will be donated to the Chiropractic Centennial Foundation; the other half will be divided among the alma maters of the registrants. The remainder of the Foot Leveler's 40th Anniversary Seminar Series will run as follows: Chicago (August 15-16); Minneapolis (August 29-30); St. Louis (September 12-13); Atlanta (October 10-11); Orlando (October 24-25); and Newark (November 7-8).
Dr. Anthony Onorato, formerly New York Chiropractic College (NYCC)'s dean of Academic Affairs, has been appointed the new associate dean of the University of Bridgeport College of Chiropractic. Dr. Onorato is a 1983 graduate of the National College of Chiropractic, and has a B.S. from St. Peter's College in Jersey City, New Jersey. During his time at NYCC, Dr. Onorato served as director of Clinical and Chiropractic Studies, and acting vice president for Academic Affairs, as well as dean of Academic Affairs. The UBCC program is the first university-based chiropractic education program in the country (see Sept. 27, 1991 issue of "DC").
For the fifth year, Palmer College of Chiropractic West (PCCW)'s 120-foot foam spine (manned by PCCW students and faculty members) "raced" in the ever popular "Bay to Breakers" trek in San Francisco. More than 80,000 runners competed in the 81st edition of the 7.8 mile race which begins by the bay, winds through Golden Gate Park, and finishes along the coastline. Approximately one million people see the annual event via live T.V. coverage.

The Logan fraternal chapter of Delta Sigma Chi is sponsoring and coordinating the event to include all chiropractic colleges in North America. Each college may enter up to two teams in each sport: basketball; golf; hockey; soccer; softball; and volleyball. Athletes will compete on the Logan campus and at nearby athletic facilities. Winning teams will receive "auction dollars" which may be used to purchase prizes during an auction held during the weekend (prizes will be donated by St. Louis-area merchants). Dr. Ruth Sandefur, associated director of research at Cleveland Chiropractic College of Kansas City (CCCKC), recently earned her doctorate in philosophy from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Her degree was granted by the School of Education in the area of curriculum and instruction. Dr. Sandefur, a 1968 CCCKC graduate, is an associate professor in the Diagnosis Department. She has taught at CCCKC for the past nine years and is on the editorial boards of several research publications.
Many relevant diagnostic signs are not performed deliberately by the examiner or by the patient at the examiner’s direction. They are observed as the patient reacts to their condition. Fortin’s finger sign, Minor’s sign, and Vanzetti’s sign are three examples of this principle.
Spearheaded by burgeoning scientific and clinical research literature, psychedelics have reached a level of media coverage and popular interest that has not been seen for over half a century. By “psychedelics,” we are referring to the unique class of substances that includes psilocybin (the active compound found in so-called “magic mushrooms”), LSD, dimethyltryptamine (DMT), ayahuasca, 5-MeO-DMT, and mescaline – each of which occurs in the natural world (except for LSD, which is a semi-synthetic compound).
While working at the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M., one of the primary care physicians stated that imaging every patient prior to receiving chiropractic was not medically necessary. It was at that point I reconsidered the need for the imaging of every patient to avoid malpractice.
