Drs. Richard E. Vincent, Wolfgang R. Munster, and Stephen A. Wilson were recently appointed to the multidisciplinary examining board of the American College of Chiropractic Neurology (ACCN). They will be examining candidates for certification in chiropractic neurology who have graduated from a postdoctoral neurology program sponsored by a Chiropractic Council on Education (CCE) accredited chiropractic college, and who have completed a 4,000 hour clinical residency in neurology. The candidates will be examined over a three-day period with a written clinical competency examination, oral examination, and the presentation of a graduate thesis. Drs. Vincent, Munster, and Wilson will participate in this month's certification examination of the college at Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts.
ACA Council on Hospital Practice Elects Officers
The American Chiropractic Association's (ACA) Council on Hospital Practice met in Houston, Texas on March 23 to vote on bylaws and elect officers. Those officers were: Dr. Steven Capps, president; Dr. Rob Phelps, vice president; Dr. Doug Andersen, secretary; and Dr. John Whitehead, treasurer. There were 22 doctors present representing the following hospitals: Doctors Hospital East Loop in Houston, Texas; Doctors Hospital Airline in Houston, Texas; Tri-Cities Hospital in Dallas, Texas; Tarrant County Out-Patient Surgical Center in Hurst, Texas; and Buena Park Doctors Hospital in Buena Park, California.

CCCKC Graduate Active in Military Service Campaign
Dr. Leo Porter, a 1988 graduate of the Cleveland Chiropractic College of Kansas City (CCCKC), spoke to CCCKC students about chiropractors and the military service. Currently, DCs are not eligible to serve as commissioned officers in the armed services, while MDs, DOs, and dentists are eligible and do serve. Legislation that would grant chiropractors this status awaits introduction in this session of Congress.
Dr. Porter, who is stationed at Irwin Army Hospital in Fort Riley, Kansas, serves as an operating room technician. Although he is a D.C. degree, Dr. Porter is not lawfully allowed to practice chiropractic in the armed services. One year ago, CCCKC initiated a letter writing campaign to Congress in support of allowing DCs to serve in the military, and it continues to date. Dr. Porter, and Dr. Carl S. Cleveland III, president of CCCKC, encouraged students to write letters asking their senators and representatives to co-sponsor bills HR 608 and S 68.
David Chapman-Smith Speaks at PCC
David Chapman-Smith, L.L.B. spoke to an audience of about 750 students and chiropractors at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa on the maturation of the chiropractic profession. Mr. Chapman-Smith is a chiropractic attorney and consultant in Ontario, Canada, and editor/publisher of the Chiropractic Report, a newsletter that reports the latest developments in the legal world of chiropractic.
He focused particularly on the study published in the British Medical Journal in June 1990 that demonstrated the effectiveness of chiropractic.
Mr. Chapman-Smith's visit was part of the Palmer Institute of Graduate Studies and Research Visiting Scholars and Invited Lecture Series.
Dr. David D. Palmer Inducted into Quad-Cities Hall of Fame
The late Dr. David D. Palmer, former president of PCC, was inducted into the Quad-Cities area "Business Hall of Fame" on May 21st. Dr. Palmer was honored for his work in the growth of Palmer College and the chiropractic profession, as well as for his leadership in broadcasting. He expanded his father's radio station into a diverse media company with interests in cable television, cellular telephones, and other communication services. Dr. Palmer will be among such laureates as John Deere, founder of Deere and Company.
NYCC's Dr. Richard Kroe Joins New Jersey Board of Examiners
Richard Kroe, D.C., director of the New York Chiropractic College (NYCC) Center for Postgraduate and Continuing Education was recently appointed by the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety as a consultant to the New Jersey State Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Dr. Kroe will work as an adviser in cases requiring investigation, review records, and observe and monitor professional practices.
LACC Offers Pre-Professional Science Courses
New College of California's Science Institute is offering, at its own Northern California campus and at the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC), accelerated, week-end pre-professional science courses for students planning to enter career programs in the healing arts and sciences, such as chiropractic.
New College of California is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges, and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
The 1991 curriculum includes general chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, human biology, and practical mathematics. For more information contact LACC.
Many relevant diagnostic signs are not performed deliberately by the examiner or by the patient at the examiner’s direction. They are observed as the patient reacts to their condition. Fortin’s finger sign, Minor’s sign, and Vanzetti’s sign are three examples of this principle.
Spearheaded by burgeoning scientific and clinical research literature, psychedelics have reached a level of media coverage and popular interest that has not been seen for over half a century. By “psychedelics,” we are referring to the unique class of substances that includes psilocybin (the active compound found in so-called “magic mushrooms”), LSD, dimethyltryptamine (DMT), ayahuasca, 5-MeO-DMT, and mescaline – each of which occurs in the natural world (except for LSD, which is a semi-synthetic compound).
While working at the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M., one of the primary care physicians stated that imaging every patient prior to receiving chiropractic was not medically necessary. It was at that point I reconsidered the need for the imaging of every patient to avoid malpractice.
