NCC Offers Free Seminars and Diplomate Programs
New York Chiropractic College (NCC) has announced that it has begun a new phase in its postgraduate and continuing education programs which will offer all of its weekend seminars and diplomate programs free of charge to any faculty member of any of the chiropractic colleges.
"We feel that it is essential that faculty from throughout the country continue their education so that they might offer their students the most up-to-date information available. To achieve this, we will offer any faculty member, from any chiropractic college, the opportunity to continue his or her education free of charge," said Richard Kroe, D.C., director of the department.
The Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education conducts numerous weekend seminars in addition to diplomate programs in orthopedics and neurology.
To take advantage of the free seminars and diplomate programs, an instructor needs to simply have his own dean of postgraduate education write a letter that states that the faculty member wishing to take the seminar is currently a full-time faculty member, and mail the letter to New York Chiropractic College, Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education, P.O. Box 167, Glen Head, NY 11545.
FCER Awards Grant to 11 Chiropractic Colleges
Northwestern College of Chiropractic (NWCC) head librarian, Marcia Stephens, M.A.L.S., MBA, wrote and submitted a grant to the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) which was recently awarded to 11 chiropractic college libraries.
The $16,850 grant allows the 11-member chiropractic college libraries, who are all members of the Chiropractic Libraries Consortium (CLIBCON), to join a cooperative bibliographic database group. According to Stephens, this allows the member chiropractic colleges to place each of their collections within one central bibliographic database, streamlines access, and encourages shared resources. The grant will cover training, membership, and participation fees required in joining CLIBCON.
Parker College Hosts Tenth Annual Conference of Chiropractic History
Parker College of Chiropractic hosted the tenth annual Conference on Chiropractic History, June 1-2, 1990, on it's new campus in Dallas, Texas.
Officially dedicated last September, the architectural award-winning campus consists of four buildings on 11.3 acres of landscaped grounds approximately 10 miles from the downtown area and 12 miles from Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.
Chiropractic Cooperative Association of Michigan vs. AMA, et al.
On July 7, 1983, the Chiropractic Cooperative Association of Michigan (CCAM) filed an antitrust suit in federal court against the AMA, the Michigan State Medical Society, Munson Medical Center, and others.
The charges and evidence against the AMA, et al. are similar to those in the Wilk case. The major differences are the inclusion of the Michigan State Medical Society and Munson Medical Center as defendants and the fact that CCAM plaintiffs are seeking monetary damages.
In the Wilk et al. trial, Attorney George McAndrews waived damages in order to have a bench trial. His wins at trial and appeal are a potential win for us in Michigan. The court may be willing to grant summary judgement on liability for the conspiracy because the issue has already been settled. It is then only a matter of proving damages.
The trial is scheduled for December 1990 but may be postponed until mid 1991.
The members of the CCAM have funded this seven year effort entirely by themselves.

World Congress of Chiropractic Students

While there is room for differences of opinion within a single organization, one powerful voice will better allow combined resources to be focused toward the common goals of the profession. AAA Update
The outcome of the AAA/Chiropractors' suit is still awaiting the final decision from Judge TerTzag, but in the meantime there has been a great victory. The Michigan insurance commissioner has overturned an earlier decision and now says that AAA must pay full benefits without regard to whether or not the patient's other health insurance has full benefits or not. This far reaching decision was encouraged by Michigan Chiropractic Council (MCC) relations with the insurance commissioner's office.
FSCO Names Executive Director
The Federation of Straight Chiropractic Organizations (FSCO) today announced the appointment of its new executive director, Maureen H. Campbell.
Ms. Campbell has been involved in developing management, communications, and membership programs for professional and trade organizations and served as a director of two national associations, the American Industrial Health Council and the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association.
FSCO President Douglas B. Gates, D.C. stated that "Ms. Campbell's extensive experience in the areas of public and government relations, membership services and general management should prove to be a valuable asset for FSCO." He noted she will be handling FSCO's day-to-day administration as well as issue management and program development.
ICA Receives National Recognition For Outstanding Involvement In World Health Day
The International Chiropractors Association (ICA) received a special achievement award presented by the American Association for World Health (AAWH) in Washington, D.C., on April 6, 1990 in celebration of World Health Day.
ICA was one of thousands of health and education organizations worldwide that joined in the celebration of World Health Day, which commemorates the founding of the World Health Organization, made up of 166 countries. In the United States, AAWH co-sponsors the event with the Pan American Health Organization and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
AAWH President Peter G. Bourne, M.D., who presented the awards at a ceremony hosted by the Pan American Health Organization, remarked that ICA was being honored for the outstanding involvement of its members in World Health Day events. Hundreds of chiropractors nationwide participated by sponsoring community health fairs, school presentations, and free spinal screenings. ICA also received this award in 1987.
Many relevant diagnostic signs are not performed deliberately by the examiner or by the patient at the examiner’s direction. They are observed as the patient reacts to their condition. Fortin’s finger sign, Minor’s sign, and Vanzetti’s sign are three examples of this principle.
Spearheaded by burgeoning scientific and clinical research literature, psychedelics have reached a level of media coverage and popular interest that has not been seen for over half a century. By “psychedelics,” we are referring to the unique class of substances that includes psilocybin (the active compound found in so-called “magic mushrooms”), LSD, dimethyltryptamine (DMT), ayahuasca, 5-MeO-DMT, and mescaline – each of which occurs in the natural world (except for LSD, which is a semi-synthetic compound).
While working at the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M., one of the primary care physicians stated that imaging every patient prior to receiving chiropractic was not medically necessary. It was at that point I reconsidered the need for the imaging of every patient to avoid malpractice.
